Refining the Investment Thesis & Investor Deck
Periodically, it’s important to reassess your company’s investment thesis and reflect any changes through a refresh of your investor deck.
Think strategically! Are you clearly communicating your vision, and strategy to achieve your objectives? Are you impressing investors with your story, your products or services, and your competitive edge? Do the slides serve to compel investors to dig deeper into the opportunity, or start them thinking about what to have for lunch three slides in?
To create an effective investor presentation, consider the following:
- Keep it brief. 15 to 20 slides to tell the story, with an appendix for additional information.
- Know your audience. Fundamental investors, potential funding sources, and industry acolytes may each key in on different aspects of the business.
- Tell a story with supporting information, don’t just disgorge data.
- Highlight your value proposition. Why is your company different? Why is it worthy of investment?
- Design visually engaging slides to capture and hold an audience’s attention, and make the information you are providing easier to understand.
- Tell the whole story. Include and explain recent financial results, balance sheet, capital allocation plans, outlook… and yes, even discuss challenges you have faced and how they have been addressed.
It’s important to optimize this foundational communications piece – not just for live meetings and conferences – but for direct outreach to new buy- and sell-side contacts.
