Investment Community Engagement:
Best Practices Checklist
By The Equity Group
When it comes to engaging with investors and analysts, there’s any number of ways to excel, or fall short. Follow our checklist to get maximum value from your interactions, whether they are virtual or in-person.
- “Warming up” investors/analysts – Your time is valuable; to use it wisely your IR team should pre-educate investors and analysts on the basics so they come to the meeting ready to have a detailed and informed discussion.
- Preparing management – Investors and analysts ask insightful and sometimes difficult questions about an array of topics. Knowing which aspects of the business they tend to focus on will maximize meeting value for everyone.
- Leveraging in-person meetings – Many folks in the investment community still like face-to-face meetings. It’s important to make a good impression by involving the right members of the team and coming prepared. Beyond being ready to discuss key aspects of the business, read up on the firm/people with whom you’ll be meeting, and bring supporting materials or sample products if applicable.
- Optimizing virtual meetings – We all know virtual meetings have become the norm and it’s important to treat them with the same rigor as in-person meetings. That includes having additional materials such as financial statements at the ready for quick reference. A good camera/microphone and background are also important in making a quality impression.
- Garnering feedback – Does your IR team solicit feedback from investors and analysts after meetings? Garnering feedback helps the IR team identify any information gaps and refine messaging, while also demonstrating management’s receptivity to input.
- Driving ongoing engagement – While it’s important to make a strong first impression, investors and analysts rarely act based on one call or meeting. With this in mind, the relationship needs to be cultivated through steady follow up from the IR team.
In addition to the above, we advise our clients on many other aspects of investment community engagement, from disclosure guidelines to opportunities that build credibility and foster relationships.
